If you’re planning to attend a WordCamp or get involved in the WordPress community, one of the first things you’ll need is a WordPress.org account. It’s free to create and serves as your identity across the entire WordPress open-source ecosystem.
Whether you’re attending a WordCamp, contributing to WordPress, helping in the support forums, or translating plugins and themes, your WordPress.org profile is your gateway to participating in the community.
Why Create a WordPress.org Account?
A WordPress.org account allows you to:
- Register for WordCamp and other official WordPress events.
- Join Make WordPress contributor teams.
- Participate in the WordPress support forums.
- Review plugins and themes.
- Earn contributor badges for your work.
- Access the Make WordPress Slack community.
- Showcase your public contributions through your profile.
Step 1: Visit the Registration Page
Go to: https://login.wordpress.org/register

Fill out the registration form with:
- Username (this will be publicly visible)
- Email address (used for verification)
Tip: Choose a username you’ll be comfortable using long-term, as it will appear on your public profile, forum posts, and contributor badges.
After entering your information, complete any required verification and click Create Account.
Step 2: Verify Your Email Address
WordPress.org will send a verification email to the address you provided.
Open the email and click the verification link to activate your account.

Confirm Your Email
Open the email and click the verification link to activate your account.

Step 3: Complete Your Account Setup
After verifying your email, you’ll be prompted to finish setting up your account by:
- Selecting your interests
- Creating a secure password
- Adding your website (optional)
- Entering your location
- Sharing your occupation

When everything is complete, click Create Account.
Step 4: Personalize Your Profile
Once your account is created, sign in to WordPress.org using your new credentials.
You can then customize your profile by:
- Choosing a display name
- Writing a short bio
- Adding your website or social media links

Your WordPress.org profile URL will look something like this: e.g., https://profiles.wordpress.org/matt.
Add a Profile Picture
WordPress.org uses Gravatar for profile photos.
Simply create or sign in to your Gravatar account using the same email address as your WordPress.org account. Once you’ve uploaded a profile picture, it will automatically appear across WordPress.org.

Start Contributing
Once your account is ready, explore the various Make WordPress teams. But if you don’t know where to start, check out our Contributor Wizard – which is a step-by-step wizard to help you decide which team might be a good fit for you!
If you are interested in more than one team, or want to spend some time in more than one team, that is fine too! Select multiple teams on the registration and decide later.
You can also join different teams, such as:
- Core – Work on WordPress itself: features, bug fixes, testing, and releases
- Documentation – Improve guides, handbooks, and learning resources
- Polyglots – Translate WordPress into different languages
- Photos – Contribute to the WordPress Photo Directory
- Training – Create tutorials and learning materials
- Test – Help with testing, bug reports, and quality assurance
- Support – Assist users in forums and improve user experience
- Community, Design, Marketing, and more
You can explore teams on the day itself and even try multiple teams.
Each team provides onboarding resources, documentation, and Slack channels to help new contributors get started.
