The kinds of things I wish someone had explained to me earlier when I first started freelancing, working with clients, estimating projects, managing stakeholder expectations, and trying to grow within agencies.

Rather than focusing on a single discipline, this session takes a broader look at the realities of agency work through six or seven key lessons pulled from real experiences across strategy, project management, client communication, pricing, contracts, team collaboration, and delivery.

Some of these lessons are technical. Most are not.

We’ll talk about why communication problems often become technical problems, how unclear expectations quietly derail projects, why “small changes” are rarely small, how pricing changes client behavior, and why some of the most valuable skills in agency work have nothing to do with development itself.

This session is designed for freelancers, developers, project managers, agency owners, or anyone curious about working in the agency world. Whether you’re trying to land your first clients, grow within an agency, or better understand how successful long-term client relationships actually work, this talk aims to share practical insights that are rarely covered in tutorials or documentation.

More than anything, this is the talk I wish I could have watched 10 years ago.

After more than 10 years working in the web development agency space across four different agencies, ranging from small teams to large enterprise-focused organizations, along with years spent freelancing, I’ve noticed something interesting: the hardest lessons in agency life rarely come from code alone.
